Justin Bieber leads worship in Paris
Justin Bieber just sang a worship song in secular Paris. Wow! Did something happen overnight that caused this to happen? I highly doubt it.
Growing up in Southern Ontario, Canada, the christian community is pretty tight and word travels fast. Talk of Justin Bieber within church circles is frequent (don’t jump to conclusions, the discussion is NOT all judgmental, but rather tinged with HOPE).
As most people know, Justin Bieber grew up in the church. Justin’s mom is a believer (I guess a bielieber too lol), and has written a book detailing her life. Much of Justin’s attraction to the christian faith can likely be attributed to how his mom raised him. In 2015 Justin shared with US magazine that “When I was 7, she wouldn’t let me listen to anything but [Pastor Judah Smith]’s tapes falling asleep.” My suspicion is that Justin’s mom was likely also a fan of Delirious and played “I Could Sing of Your Love Forever” over the years as well. What’s clear though is Justin received clear instruction in the faith, and in 2015 as detailed in GQ magazine Justin “…got on his knees and he cried. ‘I want to know Jesus’.”
Now I’ll be clear about something straight up – we don’t carry Justin’s music on The Overflow. Some of the themes are more than a little suggestive and frankly run in contrast to sound theology. But this said, I also get a clear sense through Justin’s Purpose album that he has a keen desire to live a transformed life through Christ. I honestly thank God that my imperfections haven’t been put on display like Justin’s have, and I don’t stand in judgement for one moment.
This brings me to what happened a couple of nights ago in Paris, when Justin broke out into an acoustic cover of Martin Smith’s “I Could Sing of Your Love Forever”. Watching Justin sing this at his show, it reminded me of what may be a true story, or just christian “folkore” at this point. From what I understand, before Justin “made it big”, there was a prophetic word spoken by a Pastor that Justin would one day have a significant impact for the kingdom of God. I would like to believe this is true, and based on what we’re seeing from Justin’s journey, I believe he is going to have a huge impact.
It’s my prayer that one day The Overflow will carry Justin’s next album – a theologically rich worship album. Who better than Justin to honestly explore themes of grace, love and forgiveness from a biblical perspective with help from his respected christian mentors. On that note, I also dream of a day where Justin joins Hillsong, Lecrae, Kirk Franklin, Kari Jobe, Jesus Culture and so many other amazing talented artists who have written devotionals along with us on the bible app.
Imagine the impact on the kingdom if Justin comes out with a “christian” album, maybe even a worship album?
Will you join me in praying for Justin? My prayer is the same for Justin as it is for myself — that “my heart would burn for you (Christ)” — lyrics from the song Obsession by Delirious 🙂
